It is 7 months into my service year and each new day brings me closer to apprehension of what lies ahead, I won’t say its fear but it borders on those lines. The silent messages are beginning to drop, from a wink to a casual promise of job possibilities if only I know how to play. I begin to realise some things I would like to share with you.
The service year is crucially important in the life of a fresh graduate, it has become so since its inception, it has either made or marred in some cases. Our decisions, our life style, and conduct during service have left indelible marks on our immediate future, either for good or bad.
I as well as you have heard several tales of escapades of youth corpers especially in state capitals, even in other localities, interesting, fearful, despicable etc. But it always was just a tale until now when I joined the service too and I began to see these stories unfold and take on life before me. My concern bothers on one question. What are you willing to DO to secure a better future (A JOB)? Presently the economy is most unstable; politics has taken over every sector of the labour market. The rule out there is knowing someone, have connections that matter or be ready to play ball. Worse of all it is has become the norm; most people accept it as it is without raising an eye brow.
Corpers are mostly in this position to make a choice because we are so full of life, young and eager to prove our worth out there, secure a future before we have to battle with time and age. Most times the request or offer to play ball is usually subtle and seemingly harmless, but that is just how it begins. There are predators in the cooperate world, and they know as corpers our utmost priority is securing a job afterwards, for this reason they come to you posing as helpers. The more reason we have to be cautious.
A few hints have been dropped here and there. I am sure for many of you as well, this would mostly be a female thing but I won’t be surprised if guys have had experiences too considering how perverted our world is becoming. I won’t tell you a story today though I have a personal experience but here is what I have for you, an advice. Be the corper with a difference. I know you are apprehensive and worried about what will happen after your one year service elapses. We all are, but do not despair, I am not here to preach a sermon to you. I just want you to know this, THERE IS VALUE IN VIRTUE, remember that always and make the right choices today, do not succumb to pressure or circumstances. Persevere, build yourself, and add value to you. Eventually it will pay off, like I always say, it’s just my thoughts. Do not allow yourself become a victim.
