The CDS group was welcomed by over 150 SS1 students at the school dining hall. The day started off with a presentation by corps member Agekoya Rhoda, who teaches Civic Education at AGSS and runs a leadership club. She introduced the presentation and discussed the importance of choosing the right class, enjoying your subjects, making the right choices for your future independent of parental influence and peer pressure, and assessing one’s self and interests.
Then a breakout session was introduced comprising an average of 15 persons per group (3-4 facilitators and 10-12 students) to discuss more closely with the students. Different facilitators had different approaches; some decided to split the table into mini-group discussions with a facilitator to a set of students, some decided to take the inspiration path speaking to the kids in general about how they can reach their full potential and make the right choices, others decided to speak to the students in turns on the discussion topics and also gave words of advice to the students in an in-depth, friendly and flamboyant manner.
Thereafter, 6 students volunteered to tell all present what they had learnt on the day.
Vanessa Akuboh and Abraham Solomon were instrumental in providing refreshments to the students and facilitators. The students were overwhelmed at the end of the 45 minutes session for being empowered with basic knowledge they wouldn’t have ordinarily gained in the classroom.
Lastly, the group took photographs with the students and the facilitators. All photographs on the day were taken by Chidi Ashimole. Halima Abba and Rhoda Adekoya proceeded to thank the VP admin and presented cardboards with a summary of key points discussed with a list of the contact details for all members present in case the students might need to contact them for further details.
