DG WARNS CORPS MEMBERS AGAINST BRIBERY

Director-General, National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, has warned corps members that will serve as electoral officials during the 2015 general elections to resist all forms of inducements from politicians.
Olawumi gave the warning on Monday in Kaiama while addressing 2014 Batch A corps members deployed to Bayelsa State during an unscheduled visit to the NYSC temporary orientation camp in Kaiama, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

Olawumi, who reminded the corps members of their crucial role in ensuring a free, fair and credible election in 2015, noted that they must always be seen as unbiased umpires.
He explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission had promised to provide all logistics needed by corp members, to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

The director-general said, “You are aware that some of you would be engaged by INEC as electoral officials. You are therefore warned to reject any inducements from politicians. Do not allow yourselves to be used for any gains.

“In all that you do, the national interest must come first. And I can assure you that INEC is going to provide all logistics that you need to carry out your services.” Olawumi urged the corps members to make good use of the service year to acquire new skills that would prepare them for the future. He said that the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme in the orientation course content was designed to curb the increasing unemployment among graduates of the scheme.

Olawumi said the scheme was determined to check unnecessary travels by corps members due to attendant risks on the road, advising them to always obtain necessary permits before leaving their posts.
On the new orientation camp being built by the Bayelsa State government, he described it as a masterpiece, noting that the standard of facilities being constructed by the government would ease the current challenges being experienced by corps members on camp.

Police in Ekiti State has arrested the state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Kayode Olaosebikan, for questioning over the beating up of a National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, member at a registration unit in Otun Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area of the state.
Olaosebikan, who is also the Chairman, NYSC board in the state, was seen at the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, making his statement.

Olaosebikan allegedly beat up a youth corps member, Mr. Thompson Enobong, NYSC number EK/13C/1859, who is one of the NYSC members assisting INEC in the just-concluded registration.
Enobong was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Ido Ekiti, where he is said to be receiving treatment.
Olaosebikan, however, denied beating up the corps member, saying he merely protected him.
